2nd and Pine – Start of food truck row?

Although more food trucks are popping up in Seattle, I still squeal with delight when I am hungry and stumble upon two promising food trucks situated side-by-side.

Damiana’s Blue Truck Special made its official debut today by joining Pai’s – a food truck specializing in Hawaiian food with a splash of Thai – on 2nd and Pine.

Blue Truck’s motto is “elevated comfort food” and owner Damiana Merryweather lives up to the phrase by serving up sammies such as a meatloaf and fried bologna. As Damiana Merryweather’s first customer (I wonder if they will frame and hang up one of the George Washingtons I handed them!), I try the bologna sandwich as it is the chef’s recommendation of the day.  The accompaniments are spot on – Lightly dressed arugula with orange marmalade and tasty Dijon mustard.  The bologna meat::everything else ratio is a bit overwhelming, but congenial Merryweather is staying true to her comfort food promise.

No skimping on bologna here

I think The Blue Truck Special is off to a good start and I will definitely be back .  Next time, I will try either the ratatouille sandwich or the curried chicken chop chop salad.  All sammies are $8 and all salads are $7.  Bring your greenbacks.  Damiana isn’t messing around with plastic.

Damiana is super friendly - Not surprising she used to live in Portland

Why eat at only one food truck for lunch when you can eat at two for twice the price?  Pai’s brightly painted truck, accompanied with the radiant tan chick taking my order, has me wanting to peace-out of Sea-town and greet aloha to the islands of paradise.

A perfect power lunch before hitting the deals across the street at Nordstrom Rack

I order the Kalua pork and cabbage ($7), which I generally hold as the gold standard for Hawaiian food.   Good portion and a legit smoky taste, although the pork isn’t quite juicy enough to help flavor the rice.  The meat is slightly on the mushy side, but I still happily devour the entire contents in the box.

I plan on going back for the Lemongrass Huli Huli chicken, which is boneless chicken marinated in Thai herbs and Hawaiian huli huli sauce.

These two cute trucks are downtown on 2nd and Pine every Wednesday, but they roam around Seattle other days of the week.  Check their websites for more information:  Blue Truck Special and Pai’s.

Nice review, but for the record, I was the first customer who paid …though my meatloaf sandwich was served after someone’s (presumably you) bologna.

And you gotta love Pai’s …

Good to know, Paul. If I see a dollar hanging in Damiana’s truck, I will know it is yours and not mine.

You must have snuck in there and ordered while I was walking back and forth between the two trucks, trying to determine what to eat (and ended up eating at both:-)).

      Glad you dig Pai’s, too!

the woodfired pizza truck seems to be a regular now and the thin 7″ pizza is perfect for one person. But fusion taco truck is my favorite, when its there one day a week.
    More trucks please!!

Andre – I couldn’t agree more. We, the great people of Seattle, want more food trucks.
