There are days when I wake up and crave a hearty breakfast sandwich to get me through the day. Here are my favorite grab-and-go places that will satiate your appetite without grabbing all of your money (the average breakfast sandwiches in this article range from $5-$7):
1) Nook: I am a sucker for young people starting their businesses so I am naturally drawn to this cute place in the not always so cute U-district. Co-owners and adorable couple Richard Blais and Aki Woodward serve up about 10 varieties of their biscuit sandwiches on the weekends and their homemade biscuits come in different flavor varieties, depending on the sandwich you order: Maple, buttermilk, cheddar and herb.

Nook's strawberry shortcake: Sometimes I like to start off the day by ordering dessert for breakfast. Don't judge me.
My favorite is the goat cheese breakfast sandwich paired with a buttermilk biscuit, while my eating companion fancies the standard bacon, egg, and cheddar served on a cheddar and herb biscuit.
If you are not in a rush, grab a seat at one of the booths in the back. I don’t know if it’s the pale blue paint job or the natural light, but when I am at Nook, I instantly feel myself relaxing into a dreamy zen state. I feel as if I am at a breaky joint that could be on the coast somewhere.
Note: Nook has been open for two months and they are still finessing their weekday menu/hours so drop them subtle hints to open up before 10 on the weekdays so us 9-5′ers can get some of their biscuit love before work.
Oh, and get there early on the weekends as they have been known to sell out of biscuits by 11am.
Hours: Tue-Fri 10 am-5 pm, Sat 8 am-2 pm, Sun 10 am-3 pm
2) Dahlia Bakery – I will never tire of Dahlia Bakery’s banana walnut English muffin. Tom Douglas’ homemade decadent English muffin is a standout on its own, but paired with slices of banana and walnut butter, get outta’ here.
Beware: This can easily become an addiction so as any good recovering addict, I try to limit my consumption to one a week.
The Bakery also offers savory vegetarian and meat English muffin sandwiches if banana walnut is not your thing.
Available: Mon-Fri 7:30am-10am, Sat 9am-4am & Sun 9am-3pm
3) Dahlia Workshop – Located on the ground level of South Lake Union’s Serious Pie, this architecturally cool place is a biscuit bar during the day before it morphs into a prosciutto wine bar in the evening. Tom Douglas’ hearty biscuit sandwiches come out fresh, but are a tad on the bland side. This may be deliberate as to not let the flour overshadow the innovative and striking filling varieties: Fans seem to dig the fennel sausage made in-house (so it’s not just a Jimmy Dean) with pepper relish, egg and fontina cheese.
I always have a hankering for the ham, egg cheddar with apple mustard, although the popularity of the fried chicken with Tabasco black pepper gravy and fried egg may make me change my mind one day.

Dahlia Workshop: If I can't wake up in time for breakfast, I feel comforted in knowing I can always get my fill of the ham, egg, cheddar and apple mustard biscuit for lunch
You can take your order to go, but my preference is to take a load off at one of their seat-yourself tables and enjoy the high-ceilings and great people watching.
Hours: Mon-Fri 7 am-2 pm, Sat-Sun 9 am-2 pm, lunch Mon-Fri 11 am-2 pm

yum!!! we might need one of these after our morning hikes!
My mouth waters thinking about the breakfast sandwich at Homegrown @ Melrose Market in Cap Hill. The avocado, egg and cheese sammy – delicious!

Katherine – Thanks so much for the tip. I haven’t tried Homegrown’s breaky sandwiches since the Fremont location first started experimenting with their breakfast menu last year.
I just checked out the current breakfast menu and it looks like they have brand new items since my last AM visit. I will definitely check out the avocado, egg and cheese sammy. I cannnot wait.
Thanks again,
Jen
You keep taunting me with those banana walnut biscuits! When I went they had peanut butter and rhubarb, which was certainly tasty, but I want the banana one…
Whoa Paige, I have never tried the pb and rhubarb which sounds fabulous, too. Something about nut butter paired with banana just seems so satisfyingly decadent.
