I have a full-time gig as a Program Manager for a digital marketing agency in Seattle. That means I am surrounded by creative people all day - Art Directors, Designers, Copywriters, and User Experience gurus – who crank out beautiful work for clients. My colleagues also engage in all kinds of unique endeavors outside of work. For example, I share a workspace with a journalist who is documenting a wood carver and his journey across the country, a photographer with super fun hair who merged his last name with his wife’s last name to become “Pixel,” and a dude in a band.
After working with these right-brained masters for the past year and a half, I decided I needed to embark on a creative adventure of my own.
With the support and encouragement of a few of my star colleagues (one who has moved on to start Beeswax Media, an agency geared towards marketing for owners of small businesses), I launched Roll with Jen in May of this year. In just 4 short months, I have developed a loyal readership that has catapulted me into the #1 spot for “Best Food Blog in Western Washington.”
The contest: The last time I entered a contest, it was a coloring challenge. I was 5 and could not color within the lines to save my life. So, the residual memories of my sub-par art skills caused me to slightly freak out when my friend Pesha wrote on my facebook wall two weeks ago, informing me she submitted “Roll with Jen” as a participant in King5′s “Best Food Blog in Western Washington” contest.
I figured I would share the link with friends on Mark Zuckerberg’s social media success, hoping maybe I will get a few votes. In less than 24 hours of posting on fb, I had moved to the #1 spot above veteran household name bloggers whom I have revered for years.
After 10 consecutive days, I am still holding onto the top spot out of 60 participants.
Thank you to my friends, colleagues, and readers. I feel honored you voted for me and taken aback about how you have spread the word about Roll with Jen through your social media channels.
There are 27 days left in the challenge. Wish me luck and vote for me if you like what you have been reading.
